Annual Report 2009-10: The Three Greens for Health

This public health report focuses on environment and health.

People have a right to a good quality of environment and while things are definitely getting better in Sandwell, there is still considerable room for further improvement. However, local concerns about issues such as nuisances, antisocial behaviour and littering are immediate, and tackling them makes a real difference to people’s lives- their physical and mental health and feelings of wellbeing and security, and whether or not they feel good about themselves and their communities.

Just as people need to take care of themselves, they also need to take care of the public spaces they share. If we do not look after ourselves, our health will suffer, if we do not look after our environment, we will all suffer. A healthy environment is a key to healthy people. Green promotion is health promotion. A green, clean community will not be a depressed community.

Annual Report 2008-09: 5% for Health

This public health report focuses on socioeconomic determinants of health.

Written in October 2008, at the peak of the international credit crunch crises, the report deals with the impact on health of prolonged depression, unemployment and poverty.

At a time of deepening financial restrictions in the public sector, the report addresses the issue of Programme Budgeting- or how to plan what we spend for the best health outcome (this is the "5% for Health"). Learning from the prolonged effect of the previous recession in the 1980's, the document sets out the commitment to improve the health and wellbeing prospects of the population of Sandwell.

Annual Report 2007-08: Crunch Time for Health in Sandwell

This report celebrates the 60th anniversary of the NHS and also prepares for the future budget cuts after the first signs of the "credit crunch".

The report highlights how Public Health service and levels of care have thrived under a period that invested a significant amount of resources on the NHS. However, it also notes that there are entrenched problems which have not significantly changed, like heart disease and stroke being the biggest killers in Sandwell.

The report warns that the boom years are about to be replaced with years of tightened belts in health service spending. In order to reduce the debt burden of unhealthy lifestyles, ill health, dependency and over reliance on expensive and ineffective medical treatments, we can all help to contribute towards a more effective, affordable health service through maintaining and protecting health.
